Charlie with Teapot

Charlie with Teapot 1

Hey everyone! Isn’t she just cute with her little tea pot! I stinking love her! This is Charlie with Teapot from Little Blue Button Stamps. I coloured her up with my copic markers and then enhanced the colouring with my Polychromos Coloured Pencils.

Rudy

Reindeer 1

Hey everyone! I am back with my last Christmas card for this year! The current challenge over on the Polkadoodles challenge blog  is Anything Goes. So for this card I reached for the Work & Play 5 Hollybobs Collection. In this collection you will find some extra digital images aside from the main characters and that is where I found Rudy, this gem of a reindeer! You will also find all of the patterned paper I used on this card in that collection as well! It really is a fantastic holiday collection.

The image was printed out onto kraft coloured cardstock and coloured with my Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils. I didn’t write down the colours I used as this was one of the first images I coloured up with them and I wasn’t entirely sure that it would turn out (that will teach me to always write them down!)

Reindeer 2

I used two of the lovely patterned papers from this collection and layered them on kraft and white cardstock. I had this wood veneer in my stash (probably came from Micheals) and painted it white then cut my image down to fit inside of it. The twine and lace are also from my stash.

Wistful

Whistful

Hey everyone! Welcome back to another challenge over at Polkadoodles, the new challenge is white plus one other colour. The other colour I chose to go with was brown.

I printed off Octavia Moonfly Whistful stamp on kraft cardstock and coloured her up with my Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils. I did, however use ever single brown shade pencil in the 120 count set. I then matted her on white card and dark brown card. then I used one piece of patterned paper from the Violin Theme Paper , and then 4 wood dots finish off this card.

I would like to enter this card in

Let’s Talk Coloured Pencils

*First things first this review comes from a cardmaker (crafter)*

I personally, at this time, own two brands of pencils complete sets, and have a couple of pencils from a third brand I will touch on these at the end.

Prismacolor Priemer Pencils

prismacolor-150

Prismacolors are probably the most commonly known pencil brand, they are readily available in online stores, as well as locally. Prismacolour pencils are available in sets as well as in open stock (individual pencils, so you can replace the pencils as you need without needing to purchase an entire new set). In terms of artist grade coloured pencils these are at the lower end of the cost spectrum.

These pencils are wax based and have a very soft lead, unfortunately due to the way they are currently manufactured the leads have been knows to fall out of their wood casings, and to be not centered causing breakage during sharpening. The lack of adhesion to the casings cause the leads in these pencils to break at the slightest bump of the pencil. Sharpening can be difficult causing pencils to be eaten faster due to leads breaking during sharpening.

Wax based pencils cause “wax bloom”, which is when your work gets a milky white haze on the surface of your work when you use lots of heavy layers with your pencils work. Waxy pencils layer easier and tend to have more brilliant colours. The white and cream in prismacolours are fantastic and fairly opaque with the wax and softness of these pencils!

To remove wax bloom you can wipe your work with a soft cloth, just make sure do wipe it lightly as using lots of pressure with the rag could remove some colours or if you have not brushed off all of the loose pigment could cause your image to look blurred by rubbing that loose pigment into the paper that has not been coloured.

To prevent wax bloom you can purchase a coloured pencil fixative, and use it in light coats between layers on your work.

Wax pencils also tend to leave loose pigment behind because they are such a soft pencil and break apart so easily, make sure to brush your work off using a soft brush or canned air so as not to make marks on your work with that loose pigment.

Faber-Castell Polychromos

polychromos pencils

Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils are an oil based pencil (soy bean). There are 120 different colours in this brand, again they are available in sets as well open stock. These pencils are not as common as the Primacolors but they are still easily accessible in online stores.

With these pencils being oil based they react especially well to Oderless Mineral Spirits for blending, I tend to do this for my base layer just to get the colour nice and smooth to start, they do blend well with just layering the pencils, but being as they are oil based and are a harder lead take your time and let the light layers do their work. The bonus in these harder leads is that these pencils hold their point a lot longer then the softer wax based pencils. The white and cream in this collection is not nearly as opaque as the wax based pencils and they tend to be more translucent. But the black is amazing! Oh the black!

Just because I am referring to these as oil based with a harder lead do not let that fool you, they still feel soft and lay down their colour wonderfully, but the hard lead makes those details easy to achieve without constant sharpening.

These do have a fair sticker price on them! They are on the more expensive then the Prismacolors, but, considering how much pencil I lose do u breakage of my Primacolors I find that they cost me about the same in the long run.

You will not experience “wax bloom” with these pencils as they are oil based! There is also not as much loose pigment floating around my page with these pencils.

I find these pencils play nicer layering over my copics then the Prismacolors, this could be because there is no wax laying on top of my alcohol markers.

Caran D’ache Luminance

Luminance doos

These pencils basically the top of the line wax based coloured pencils. Their price tag could make you fall over. Currently I only own white and buff titanium in this range. But I absolutely love them! They are still the soft pencils with the smooth consistency you expect from a wax based pencil. But they do not break as much or fall out of their casing and all of those issues me, and many others, experience with the Prismacolors.

I can not speak from personal experience about working with this range on its own, as stated above, I do not have them all. Yet. But the two colours I own are absolutely magnificent. They are so opaque and play well with my Polychromos.

Many artists that use these pencils exclusively say that the “wax bloom” is not there with these pencils like it is with Prismacolors. I will test this for myself if I ever get a larger range of these pencils.

Hey Girl

DSC_0044

Here is a fun quick and simple card I made this afternoon, using come Faber-Castell Gelato’s and some Pink Paisley Die cuts and vellum.

DSC_0045

A close up of the center of the card, I love this little trick, left over die cuts that are white on the back, you love the shape but not the pattern anymore, flip them over, use the white side, and love them again!

Fantastic Feathers

Feathers 1

Yay for more birthday cards, its that time of year that I am doing trade shows and these are a big seller for me

I die cut the largest feather out of the Spellbinders  Shapeabilities Feathers in craft foam, I then took some Gelatos and mixed a small amount of them in a blue and a pink into some Golden light molding paste. I think adhered my craft foam stamp onto a block using temporary adhesive (this stamp is reusable as long as you clean it). I coated my “stamp” using a pallet knife with my tinted molding paste and stamped the feather, then dried it and stamped the second flower.

Feathers 2

I used a happy birthday sentiment from the Simon Says Stamp Birthday Balloons Set  using Hero Arts Charcoal Shadow ink. Took the Prima Color Bloom Spray in Sunshine  and randomly splattered the color on the backround (I can not find the link for this in my list for at the bottom but I know SSS has it in stock)

Feathers 3

Finished it off with adding some random enamel dots from my stash

May’s favourites….

Here we go again another month is done and here are my 3 favourite products for this month

Indigoblu Mega Flakes:

MF Royal Peacock-650x650

This stuff is seriously lovely, I know you haven’t seen any project with it…. YET! Be on the lookout next month as I have been making some fun things with it. You can start with the Kit in a Box which comes with everything you need to get started, then there are many other colours of the Mega Flakes, I personally love the Lancashire Rose Flakes, and the next ones I will be picking up are the ones pictures above, Royal Peacock.

Tim Holtz Ray Stencil

THRays

Stencils have been really popular in the cardmaking world lately and here is one of my favourites, this is a fun stencil from Tim Holtz, when you blend different colours together through it its just a truely lovely look.

Faber Castell Gelato

FaberCastellGelatosBlue

These are so fun! They come in a wide variety of colours, are water soluble and just blend lovely with only your finger! I made a little Butterfly Card using them earlier this month and must play with them some more.

One of these days I will have a flop for you all, something new I tried this month that I just really didn’t like, but this month that did not happen. Which is actually a good thing I didn’t waste anything money

Butterfly Card

butterfly

So, as lots of you know I have been playing catch up with the Watercolor For Cardmakers Class. It is fun, challenging, and irritating all at the same time. All I can tell you is I am sick of flowers… hence the butterfly.

butterfly 1

The circle is made with Gelato’s in some random colours, blue, pink, yellow, orange, grey, and purple. The butterfly stamp is a Martha Stewart one from 2009, and is stamped in Distress ink .

butterfly 2

I stamped the image with Dusty Concord, then watercolored in peacock feathers, and picked raspberry. The sentiment comes from the Handwritten Greetings set from Simon Says Stamp, and is stamped in Versa Fine Onyx Black. As usual my card base is Neenah Solar white 110 lbs cardstock cut to a standard A2 size card, the pink pannel is out of my scrap bin, so I am unsure of where it came from and is 4x 5 1/4, and the front with image is Canson 140lbs coldpress watercolor paper cut to 3 3/4 x 5.
